What's with Probiotics? - NourishingMe

What’s with Probiotics?

Probiotics are an amazing supplement. They can be extremely therapeutic in assisting individuals to heal and recover from major gut issues affecting their health.

However, most probiotics are just that, a TOOL to assist in the healing process.

Currently there are no studies to prove that probiotics can PERMANENTLY recolonize the gut with particular strains of bacteria. They just work on a TEMPORARY basis, passing through your microbial ecosystem, sometimes being eliminated in as little as 2-4 days.

As they pass through, they do however provide a vast array of health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, producing health promoting metabolites, keeping the bad bacteria in check, modulating the immune system and much more. But these benefits aren’t permanent.

If you’ve been repeatedly exposed to rounds of antibiotics, antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory medications or proton pump inhibitors; your gut may have been affected in a catastrophic way. Your bacterial strains may be greatly reduced or even worse, some may even become completely extinct.

If a strain of bacteria becomes extinct, unfortunately no probiotic is capable of RE-SEEDING the gut. The only way to regain this bacterial species is through a Fecal Microbial Transplant.

HOWEVER, if there is a species that is hanging on by a thread, meaning that it’s not quite extinct, then there is STILL HOPE!!!!!

Each unique bacteria within our microbiome loves to feed on CERTAIN FOODS. The more of this food that it consumes, the more it will grow!!! Therefore, what you eat will dictate whether your gut contains high amounts of ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guy’ resulting in a health giving or harmful environment.

STOOL TESTING can reveal the bacterial diversity within your gut; showing the amounts of both the good bacteria and the pathogenic bacteria. Studies now confirm the more good bacteria you have, the better physical and mental health you may have. Majority of the time, a very DIVERSE ecosystem is a healthy one.

Stool testing is an amazing tool that gives us so much INSIGHT into your health. When both the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria are revealed from your stool test, we can devise huge amounts of information. This enables us to create a UNIQUE food prescription to regrow and replenish your microbial ecosystem.

This will in turn give you many long-term health benefits and hopefully a better quality of life.
